Take Charge!

Parental Control allows you to block programs by channels, ratings or time of day. Here's the basic process:

  1. First select and lock the channels, ratings, or time of day.
  2. Second, be sure to turn on Parental Control for the cable box.

To Lock Channels and Ratings

  1. Press the Settings button twice on the remote control.
  2. Press the down arrow button to highlight Block: Channels or Block: Ratings.
  3. Press the SELECT button.
  4. Enter the four numbers of your PIN.
  5. Press the up or down arrow buttons to

     


    highlight the channel or rating to be blocked.
  6. Press SELECT for each channel or rating.
    • NOTE: Channels or ratings that are currently locked have a locked symbol.
  7. When all channels or ratings you want to block have a padlock shown, press the A button to accept.
  8. If you have not already done so, follow the instructions below to Turn On Parental Control.

 

Turn On Parental Control

  1. Press the MENU button.
  2. Press the up or down buttons to highlight the Parental Control option
  3. Press SELECT to add a locked symbol to the Parental Control option. The PIN Entry screen appears.
  4. Enter your PIN to turn on the Parental Control.

Temporarily Unlock a Channel

  1. From the Program Guide, highlight the channel you want to watch and press the SELECT button.
  2. If channel is locked, the following message appears:  Viewing is blocked due to Parental Control.
  3. Press SELECT.
  4. Press the up or down arrow to highlight Unlock This Channel Only.
  5. Press SELECT and enter your PIN.
  6. A confirmation screen displays the message, Lock is disabled for the channel. The lock remains in effect until one of the three following conditions are met, 1) you turn the cable box off and back on, 2) five hours have elapsed, 3) you manually lock the channel from the Settings Menu.

 

Understanding TV Ratings

all childrenAll Children

This program is designed to be appropriate for all children. Whether animated or live-action, the themes and elements in this program are specifically designed for a very young audience, including children from ages 2 to 6. This program is not expected to frighten younger children.

directed to older childrenDirected to Older Children

This program is designed for children age 7 and above. It may be more appropriate for children who have acquired the developmental skills needed to distinguish between make-believe and reality. Themes and elements in this program may include mild fantasy violence or comedic violence, or may frighten children under the age of 7. Therefore, parents may wish to consider the suitability of this program for their very young children.

Directed to older children - fantasy violenceDirected to Older Children - Fantasy Violence

This rating applies to those programs where fantasy violence may be more intense or more combative than other programs in this category. Such programs are designated TV-Y7-FV.

General AudienceGeneral Audience

Most parents would find this program suitable for all ages. Although this rating does not signify a program designed specifically for children, most parents may let younger children watch this program unattended. It contains little or no violence, no strong language, and little or no sexual dialogue or situations.

Parental Guidance SuggestedParental Guidance Suggested

This program contains material that parents may find unsuitable for younger children. Many parents may want to watch it with their younger children. The theme itself may call for parental guidance and/or the program contains one or more of the following: moderate violence (V), some sexual situations (S), infrequent coarse language (L), or some suggestive dialogue (D).

Parents Strongly CautionedParents Strongly Cautioned

This program contains some material that many parents would find unsuitable for children under 14 years of age. Parents are strongly urged to exercise greater care in monitoring this program and are cautioned against letting children under the age of 14 watch unattended. This program contains one or more of the following: intense violence (V), intense sexual situations (S), strong coarse language (L), or intensely suggestive dialogue (D).

Mature Audience OnlyMature Audience Only

This program is specifically designed to be viewed by adults and therefore may be unsuitable for children under 17. This program contains one or more of the following: graphic violence (V), explicit sexual activity (S), or crude indecent language (L).
